Verrucas... what are they?

Verruca is the Latin word for wart. There is no difference between a verruca and a wart and the terms are interchangeable usually depending on location. There are approximately 150 different human papilloma viruses (HPV) causing warts/verruca on the skin and mucosa of different parts of the body.
A person’s immune system also plays a very big role in preventing the onset of verruca infections. It is not uncommon to find that after moments of stress or illness patients have developed them due to their immune system being suppressed. Once the immune system improves they can resolve spontaneously without the need of any treatment. However, some can be persistent and spread, become unsightly and difficult to treat. Often the amount of callus over the verruca makes daily activities difficult and painful, debridement of the callus can reduce the pain.
They are generally transmitted via direct or indirect contact.

What do they look like?

They can be flat or raised, have a cauliflower appearance and possibly have some underlying black dots. A verruca is more painful from pinching (from side to side) rather than from direct pressure to the surface.
It can indicate a corn or worse still, certain skin cancers, therefore it is important to seek advice immediately. At Premier Foot Clinic, on your first consultation you can be reassured that you will receive an accurate diagnosis and the best advice to tackle your verruca.

What is the treatment?

Some verrucas may resolve with over the counter preparations, others may need stronger treatments like combination acids or cryotherapy. The current gold standard treatments are considered to be Swift microwave therapy and Faulkner’s needling.
I am excited to introduce a new treatment which is giving excellent results. It has become my favourite in a very short time. This is a topical treatment, cost effective, relatively pain-free, with no need to keep dressings on or to keep foot dry.
Before any treatment I will carry out an assessment to give you an overview of all treatment options, the benefits and drawbacks of each, and provide a recommendation based on your individual circumstances. In some cases, no treatment may be the best option.

So many people have given up on treatments for stubborn verrucas – Swift microwave therapy and Faulkner's needling offers those patients renewed hope, and for almost 80% of patients, complete freedom from their condition.

Swift treatment: With treatment being over in seconds, Swift provides a precise and easy way of treating verrucas and other benign skin lesions. The same technology that has been used in the fight against cancer since the 1970s has been brought to the fields of Podiatry & Dermatology in this pioneering treatment.

Faulkner's needling: With this option, you only need one treatment. The foot is anaesthetised, and then the verucca is gently punctured with a needle multiple times, encouraging the body's natural immune response.
