Why do I have heel pain ?

If you wake up in the morning and your heels are painful, or if you get heel pain with prolonged periods of standing, you may have a condition known as plantar fasciitis. This is caused by the inflammation of the plantar fascia (a thick fibrous band) that joins the centre of the heel bone to the toes The plantar fascia itself is one of the strongest structures in your body. Studies have shown up to 30 times your body weight can be loaded through the plantar fascia with heavy impact.

It can be associated with other foot abnormalities such as a flat foot, leg - length discrepancy or hyper-mobile feet.

Plantar fasciitis is treated with combination of therapies including stretching of the facia and other associated musculature, footwear advice and use of special insoles (orthotics). With exercise compliance, most cases should ease within 3-4 weeks.

Correct Diagnosis

It is also important to note that not all heel pain is plantar fasciitis. This is because of the muscle and nerve interactions with the heel that may also produce similar symptoms, but require different treatment.
At Premier Foot Clinic, we can offer an accurate diagnosis and compile an effective treatment plan. If indicated, we carry out a full gait analysis using a computerised force plate system. This takes the guess work out of the prescription needed for the orthotics and offers truly custom made orthotics.

Sometimes, the pain to the heel can be caused by muscles further up the leg. At Premier Foot Clinic, we also use acupuncture, which can sometimes offer almost instant pain reduction.
