Ear Acupuncture

Ear Acupuncture (Auriculotherapy) is a form of alternative medicine based on the idea that the ear is a micro system, which reflects the entire body represented on the auricle, the outer portion of the ear. Conditions affecting the physical, mental or emotional health of the patient can be treatable by stimulation of the surface of the ear exclusively. Similar to mappings used in many areas of the body, such as reflexology.

Balancing effect

Ear acupuncture has a balancing, homeostatic effect. The same point can be used to treat over- and under-functioning. For example, the point Hunger can be used to treat both an appetite that is too large and one that is too small. This makes it safe; there will be no resultant effect if there is no imbalance that needs addressing, even though the point was stimulated.

Risks

Ear acupuncture is a low-risk treatment. A systematic review of adverse events reported in more than 40 published research papers found no serious adverse events.13th most common minor side effects were dizziness, pain at the site of insertion, nausea, skin irritation, and minor bleeding.
On your first visit, a full medical history will be taken of your case and other related conditions, and the ear is examined for any pathology. Specific problems in the body are revealed by areas of the external ear that are darker, discolored, or flaky. Pathological ear points are more tender that is if you have a pain in your heel, the corresponding heel point on the ear is tender when palpated.

Using all the medical history and examination information, treatment points to be used are selected, usually 5-7 in each ear.
The needles are sterile and very fine and insertion is pain free.
Acupuncture needles remain in place for 20-40 minutes, and patients often report feeling very calm and relaxed during treatment.
In order to achieve lasting results, a course 5 of treatments are needed followed by maintenance sessions to avoid relapse.

Is it scientifically proven?

There have been studies showing effectiveness of acupuncture small sample sizes.

Post-Surgery Pain

Acupuncture has long been used for the treatment of pain. For a report published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2010, investigators sized up 17 studies on ear acupuncture's effectiveness in pain management.9 The report's authors concluded that ear acupuncture may be effective for the treatment of a variety of types of pain, especially postoperative pain.
A 2017 review of studies looked into using ear acupuncture for immediate pain relief. They included 10 randomized controlled studies that compared ear acupuncture to analgesics. Six of the studies found ear acupuncture superior to analgesics, while three studies found it comparable. The authors concluded that ear acupuncture could be useful in the first 48 hours of pain.
